We’ve all watched different home shows on HGTV, DIY, and various other home improvement networks. It’s riveting to see how the masters of the trades use their expertise to bring a homeowner’s backyard dreams into reality. One of the most widely home features trending these days are Gunite pools. We’ve been specifying and installing these durable, long-lasting in-ground pools for quite a few homes, so we’d like to give you the inside scoop on Gunite pools for custom homes on Long Beach Island.
What is Gunite?
Gunite is a combination of cement, sand, and water applied through a pressure hose. Once dry, it becomes a hard layer of concrete. This material is used in the building of tunnels, dome construction, ditches and channels, dikes, dams, as well as a variety of structural repairs and reinforcements. It has recently become popular for use in indoor pool construction.
How Is Gunite Applied?
Once your pool is planned, designed, engineered, and permitted, excavation will begin. The hole is dug in the shape of your pool, and then it is time to install the plumbing, electrical, and gas. Once the roughs are complete, it is time to install the steel rebar frame. The frame is what forms the reinforcement of the pool shell before the Gunite material is applied. The gunite is shot onto the steel frame through a pressure hose and is extremely durable. This means your pool will last a very long time, with no liners needed or to replace later on down the line.
