While we’d hate to rush the season, we know how quickly the end of the year can sneak up on us, and that’s why our team at Stonehenge thought it would be a good idea to talk about getting your home ready for winter. Whether you plan on staying in your custom home on LBI year-round or enjoy it seasonally, there are some very important tasks homeowners should do to help preserve their home and keep it in tiptop shape during the off season.

1. Freezing Temperatures & Water Lines

As the weather cools and plants go dormant or have lived their course, you probably don’t use your garden hoses as much once fall sets in. A good rule of thumb we always tell our homeowners is when the nightly low temperature hits around 40 degrees or if there is a frost advisory, it’s a good idea to blow out your hoses, air conditioning lines, and any other water lines you won’t be using so they don’t freeze and crack. Even though we can experience warm temperatures well into October, we always say it’s better to blow your hoses out twice than to have to replace them!

2. Indoor Climate Control

Another tip we may not always think about as we prepare to winterize our homes is the indoor climate. Whether you’ll be leaving for the season or taking a vacation, it’s important to maintain a sufficient temperature in your home to protect the interior features as well as your pipes. Make sure to set your thermostats to a warm enough temperature that wood floors and molding won’t warp, and your pipes won’t burst. Our team at Stonehenge recommends setting your thermostats to at least 55° Fahrenheit or higher to help maintain the interior of your home and keep your pipes toasty so they don’t freeze!
