We’ve all watched different home shows on HGTV, DIY, and various other home improvement networks. It’s riveting to see how the masters of the trades use their expertise to bring a homeowner’s backyard dreams into reality. One of the most widely home features trending these days are Gunite pools. We’ve been specifying and installing these durable, long-lasting in-ground pools for quite a few homes, so we’d like to give you the inside scoop on why we love Gunite pools for custom homes on Long Beach Island.
What is Gunite?
Gunite is a combination of cement, sand, and water that is applied through a pressure hose. Once dry, it becomes a hard layer of concrete. Traditionally, this material is used in the building of tunnels, dome construction, ditches and channels, dikes, dams, and for a variety of structural repairs and reinforcements. It has recently become popular for use in indoor pool construction.
How Is Gunite Applied?
Once your pool is planned, designed, engineered, and permitted, excavated can begin. Once the hole is dug in the shape of your pool, it is time to install the plumbing, electrical, and gas. Once the roughs are complete, it is time to install the steel rebar frame. The frame is what forms the reinforcement of the pool shell before the Gunite material is applied. The gunite is shot onto the steel frame through a pressure hose and is extremely durable. This means your pool will last a very long time, with no liners needed or to replace later on down the line.
Why We Love Gunite for Inground Pools?
We love using Gunite for the inground pools and spas we build for our custom homes on Long Beach Island. On LBI where the lots can be tight, Gunite is the perfect solution because the pool can be any size or any shape, as opposed to a fiberglass pool which is molded in a factory and come in specific shapes & sizes. There are a variety of options for finishes and features, including waterfalls, custom shapes, custom stairs, and many other materials and finishes to coordinate with the rest of your outdoor living area. Depending on our homeowner’s imagination and budget, we can customize their pool to their specific tastes. A Gunite pool is beautiful, flexible, and durable. It is our preferred choice for inground pool materials for custom homes on Long Beach Island.
